Been teaching a class in Pomona in addition to my classes in Universal City and I think I may have fallen in love with the Inland Empire!
Pomona ROCKS!
It's a cute town, old, Artists are moving in, there's a bakery there that the smell is incredible and things, like rent are cheaper.
People I know bad mouth it without ever being there other than The LA County Fair, or some car racing thing, but to them all I have to say is, "Dude, Jessica Alba was born there!" and all is forgotten.
On my friend David's page:
Jürgen Fauth writing: "Because of the constant references to film as a medium, I was worried that seeing the film on DVD (available on August 14) would diminish the experience more than it usually does. But like the river you famously can't step into twice, "Inland Empire" is a shape-shifter of a movie that reconstitutes itself differently every time, and my own TV screen turned out to be a fascinating place to see it."
Then he adds: "Let me draw your attention to a connection that took me by complete surprise last night (yes, I screamed.)"
But I found another connection:
In Billy Wilder's Sunset Boulevard, Norma Desmond (Gloria Swanson) describes to Joe Gillis (William Holden) a film version of Salome that she has written for her return to cinema. Gillis cynically retorts "They'll love it in Pomona" and Desmond fails to notice his sarcasm, responding, "They will love it every place."
Studios use to Test their films in Pomona to see whether the film will live or die.
Inland Empire contains a monologue in which two homeless women discuss people they know in Pomona and whether or not you can get there from Los Angeles by bus.
Also, Lucy and Ricky had their honeymoon there!
The World Famous Jerry Lentz
What you are about to become obsessed with is completely true.
