I just watched the DVD, "Sherlock Holmes: The Voice of Terror" today and found it very similar to what is going on in the News.

The first thing that was odd was that Universal attempts to modernize (well, back in 1942 anyway) Holmes by having him work with the British government who is helpless in dealing with a series of radio broadcasts that predict terrorist destruction.

The film is based on "His Last Bow," I've read it and didn't even recognize it here. This was Hollywood aiding the war effort, using Sherlock Holmes as propaganda against Nazis.

Basil Rathbone's sits listening to the radio as the "Voice of Terror" makes his statements much like the Al Queda videotapes. There is a scene where Holmes and Watson go to the waterfront and a saloon that looks so noirish and cool. I watched this on my laptop as the TV has Anderson Cooper in London uncovering the terrorists.

The terrorists in the film derail a train filled with passengers.

The saboteur on the radio terrorize everyone about a Nazi invasion of the British Isles, so the British Intelligence's Inner Council calls in Sherlock Holmes to help.

Today terrorists have to use the internet and video to get their messages out, because Clear Channel owns almost every radio station, in fact we have to get our news the same way because Clear Channel stations can't break format for any local emergency warnings. Less is more, doesn't have room for local news when 10 songs in a row is more important than your safety.

Holmes, in this film has BBC Radio, we have Myspace/Fox News.

I love these films, and have watched a DVD a day from this series, they are as far removed from Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's original stories as they can be, but I dig them. The lighting and cinematography are great. Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce are just wonderful.

I wish Bush would call in Sherlock Holmes to help.
