As I write this, I'm in the middle of, "Light Keeps Me Company" a video I have wanted to watch for sometime, so I rented it from Green Cine.
There are some great interviews with Woody Allen, Bibi Andersson
, Harriet Andersson
, directed by Carl-Gustaf Nykvist
, son of legendary cinematographer Sven Nykvist
, who the film is about.
Nykvist's career came to an end when he was diagnosed with a rare disorder that affects his speech. The film is about Nykvist's upbringing and turbulent private life, a divorce, the suicide of one of his sons, his collaboration with Ingmar Bergman, who recalls, "I don't miss making films, but I miss the collaboration with Sven."
In the film Nykvist said something that made me stop it and think about it, "I feel the light around me, wrapped in it, how can you feel lonely in the light?"
I also rented, but this time from Netflix, "The Work of Director Anton Corbijn" about the Dutch artist Anton Corbijn
, known for the music videos he directs and his famous photographs. When I was a subscriber to NME
, it was his work I looked forward to seeing.
His work with Joy Division, U2
and Depeche Mode
is amazing, plus I've never seen Samantha Morton
look hotter than through his lens.
I was showing the DVD to a friend who was so mesmerized by it, that she fell asleep hard and fast.
The interesting thing about both DVDs that I was unaware of before seeing them, is that Nykvist's parents were Missionaries and Corbijn's father was a Vicar.
Somehow photography saved them and they both found spirituality in images.
I've watched so many videos and stared at my own recent video work while editing new stuff, my eyes are blurry and Red. When I watch these works by the greats, it is inspiring, but then also, What can I say, that hasn't been said by others better?
It really has all been done before, Hasn't it?
I'll have to aim lower in my work, just so I can get out of the bed by 2PM.
